Aero is running but not Aero Glass which is the one with the
transparent windows.
Until you get a graphics card that is fully DX9 compliant, you're stuck with what you have. No amount of drivers can help you if the hardware isn't there.

The 915 graphics are fully DX9 complient, my Intel 915 graphics work fine I did have to select the 128MB memory allocation in the BIOS and I did have to update the drivers for the actual graphics chip from the Intel Website.

I'm not a computer-literate person. Could someone give me an answer in "plain" English to my 2 questions:
I have 1-year old laptop running MS XP Home Edition w/SP2 and the Intel 915 chipset (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900), a 2.13 Ghz Intel Pentium M Processor 770 and 1 GB of DDR SDRAM. From reading this long thread (titled "Intel 915 and Aero"), I understand that if I upgrade to MS Vista, I will not be able to use the Aero glass UI feature--unless Intel releases a MS Vista WDDM 915 graphics driver in the future.
(1) Will I be able to use the rest of the MS Vista features/tools?
(2) Will MS Office 2002 or 2003 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Accel) install and run on Vista without problems?

Intel seems more interested in selling Core 2 Duo than creating drivers for old products. They have pretty much abandoned the 915 chipset. I also have a computer with a 915 chipset. I don't really expect that it will ever be Aero Glass compatible. I sincerely hope I'm proved wrong.

I am not computer-literate, so am looking for an answer to my 2 questions in "plain" English.
I have a 1-year old laptop with the Intel 915 graphics chipset (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900), a 2.13 Ghz Intel Pentium M CPU, 1.0 GB DDR SDRAM and MS Windows XP Home Edition w/SP2.
1) Other than the Aero feature, will I be able to use all the other Vista features/tools?
2) Will MS Office 2002 or 2003 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Accel) install and run properly on Vista?

Much depends on what other devices are installed on your laptop. If there are Vista drivers for the devices in your laptop then the answers to your questions are:
(1) Yes.
(2) Yes.
Laptops are the most likely computers to fail to run Vista because of driver problems. Some laptops use customised chipsets that need special drivers from the manufacturer of the laptop. Some laptops work just fine with the generic drivers included with Vista. The only way you will know is to ask your laptop manufacturer. They may say yes, no, or we haven't tested it. If the answer is no or maybe then you'll have to try it yourself to be sure. They may say no just because they don't want the support headaches.

Intel has newer drivers for this card. It's not wddm, but it made everything look better.

Your answer seems to imply that all one need do is buy an ATI graphics card. But I have seen others say that even that will not work. The problem is Intel refusing to support its motherboard.
Here is a good Intel article on the subject of this thread.

Excellent link! The 915 was probably the most discussed chipset discussed during TechBeta. I don't know how many threads there were that started out "Where can I get the Aero driver for my Intel 915 graphics adaptor?" There must be a ton of them out there.

Intel should be charged with child abandonment. And investigated by the Justice Department for collusion and restraint of trade.

Per Intel web site these chipsets are not supported for Windows Aero. They will operate Vista Basic Home only. They are not able structually to EVER support AERO.
The Windows Vista Uprade utility states no action required under "Device Details". It also states under "System Details" your current video card will not support Windows Aero. Windows Aero requires at least a 128MB video card. That is MINIMAL. Should use a 256MB.
Upgrading (repalacing) our video cards will be rquired. (If possible- no information on that yet)
The Intel 915/910 is a PCI Exprees video card. I have found conflicting information so far if an upgrade is possible. Can you take the old card out and put an upgrade in or is it Intel only.
Will update if I find out more.

Hi Mikey,
My system is using the intel 915 chipset (via an MSI mother board) and I'm running aero no problem with Vista Ultimate. I also discovered my video card (Radeon X300SE) which I thought was 128Mb turned out to have "Hyper memory" and actually only has 32Mb on board and steals the rest from system memory. I still run aero no problem. I did find that upgrading the main RAM to 2Gb made an enormous difference.

In device manager which actual graphics chip does it indicate is part of your 915 chipset?

You are using the Radeon card to run your video not the original 915 or both if that is possible. What I included was info provided by Microsoft and Intel. Of course you have to dig for it. I like keeping up to date on info but I think I'll pass on Vista for now. If it is anything like XP it will have more bugs than a termite hill. I'll probably wait a while give this PC to my nephews and start from scratch. Thanks for the info.

Hi,
If you are using Intel 915 chipset without aonther graphic chipset onboard, goto http://www.petitiononline.com/intel915/petition.html and sign it. The owner of petition will send this list to Intel that we are in trouble.
Cheers, Pound@Gestalt

Thanks for the information. I have discovered that I have video built on the motherboard and no AGP or PCI-E slot. The only way to run Windows Aero is to use PCI slot with a new card Diamond has come out with or change the motherboard. Better to buy a new PC later this year if Intel doesn't come up with a solution. Thanks for the updates.
